More detail:

Are the external speakers connected when you attempt to play the sound  
attachments? You get no sound at all? Does iTunes open up? If you save  
the attachment to your desktop, select it (one click) and then hold  
the Apple key () and hit the I key, what application is set to open  
it? Suppose that you select iTunes as the application, then click the  
Change All button? Will it now open and play?

In terms of hardware, here's the behavior I expect:
1) No external speakers connected - sound (any/all sound) through  
internal speaker  --there's only 1 on your machine
2) External speakers fully connected --sound through external speakers  
only
