[DEMUG] Online project management software

I need to kick things up a notch in terms of managing my workflow;  
simply keeping a to do list in a text app isn't cutting it anymore.  :)

I spent a couple of hours last night googling project management  
software and come up with some interesting possibilities but I  
thought I'd ask the list for input as I might be missing something  
obvious.
My goal is a solution that would allow me to manage fairly small/ 
simple projects online.

I have a freelancer (independent contractor) who works from her home  
and comes into my office only sporadically. My assistant (an  
employee) is in the office one or two days a week and works from home  
the rest of the time. So, the ability of the other two to access the  
chart online at any time is key.

Often two or even all three of us will work on the same project, with  
each of us handing different tasks. The tasks are not all that big,  
but things can fall through the cracks if we don't keep up with what  
needs to be done next and by whom.

My first choice would be to maintain a workflow chart online where we  
can track the status of projects and all three of us have access to  
see where a project is. My ideal product would allow all three of us  
to be able to add notes about what is done/what is left to be done.

I really don't need anything complicated, we rarely have more than  
ten projects to be tracked at the same time, and each job usually has  
ten steps max to be monitored.

I don't have to have software developed specifically for photo  
studios, I mostly just need the organizational structure and the  
ability to access and add comments by all three of us.

Just hoping I might luck up on someone who has found such an animal...
