Apple has iWork 08 that has a word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation software called Keynote. It is supposed to be a good program. There is NeoOffice which is a free office suite with word processing, a spreadsheet, and presentation software. http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

Mariner Write and Mariner Calc are both good basic word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Another free Word Processor is AbiWord which is very good.

You might want o check how compatible she needs to be with Microsoft Office. To get Office for a reasonable price she might try to get the version for Home and Students. It is $129.00 plus shipping off amazon.com.
