[DEMUG] all sorts of Firewire issues

Michele have you tried plugging just one drive into the firewire port  
to see it appears on the desktop?
Try one drive after another as one of the drives might be dragging the  
buss down.
You might also want to try resetting PRAM and NVRAM.
To reset PRAM restart your platform holding down the four keys "CMD  
OPT P R"
Be sure to keep holding down these keys until you hear the start-up  
"Gong" at least three (3) times.
To reset NVRAM reset you platform while holding down "CMD OPT O F"  
until you see information being displayed on the screen.
Then enter:
reset-nvram	(enter)
set-defaults	(enter)
reset-all		(enter)
at which time your platform will reset.

Then check if your firewire drives are being connected.
You might also want to read the console logs.
