You can't daisy chain with USB because the HDs have only one USB port  
per drive, unlike FW which has two FW800 ports per drive (probably  
for that very reason)

I'll do the permissions repair. Certainly worth a shot.

And, good news is that the FW400 port that is used to attach the  
Apple Cinema Display is still working. :)

Will fire up the machine (I've been letting it rest) and try  
permissions repair.

I have other FW drives, but I don't think it's the drive issue as  
those drives work on othr machines.
