[DEMUG] De-Photoshopping

Help!  I had Adobe Photoshop 4.0 LE  that came with a scanner I 
bought.  Loved it and would have happily used it forever, but I got a 
G5 with OSX.  I could keep going back into Classic mode, but wanted 
to stay in OS X, so I bought a cheapie version of Photoshop 7.0, you 
know, the one where they say it isn't good for registration, tech 
support, or upgrades.  It worked fine for a while, then began to 
freeze up everytime I tried to view a photo.  I reinstalled it 4 
times, went to Adobe for an update (of course, it couldn't recognize 
my version).

I can live without Photoshop, but how can I easily convert all those 
photos?  I tried dragging them into iPhoto and copying back onto the 
desktop, but Photoshop still tries to open when I click on them. 
Preview can't see them.  Oh yes, I saved many of them without the 
.jpg tag, so have to manually rename them just to see them in iPhoto!

I can't justify buying a full version of Photoshop with the little I 
would use it.

Any suggestions?
