I've promised my niece a MacBook for high school graduation, and  
since laptop theft (and loss) is a very real possibility on college  
campuses, I want to get her into the habit of regular backups right  
off the bat.  I can get her Time Capsule (500 GBs for $279) or a non- 
Apple external hard drive for about half that price.

I've been online and read reviews of Time Capsule and they are quite  
a few complaints (set-up is confusing, tech support poor, backup  
times too lengthy.) First generation products often have bugs to be  
worked out and it looks like Time Capsule might be in that class.   
That and the price make me lean toward getting a regular non-Apple  
drive if it would do the job just as well.

Wifi connectivity is not a big deal; she will have just the one  
laptop to back up.

Anyone?
