Scareware coerces Mac users out of cash with privacy threat
By Jacqui Cheng
"Many of us seasoned Mac users like to live dangerously when it comes
to viruses and malware—or rather, not-so-dangerously, since the risk
(when compared to say, an unprotected Windows machine) is relatively
low. Still, the general public is mostly well-conditioned at this
point to fear anything coming into their machines—at least the ones
who are paying attention are, anyway. For example, my dad won't even
open e-mail attachments for stuff that I send to him.
It's those kinds of people who might be susceptible to a Trojan that
Sophos Labs began warning Mac users about last week (thanks to MacUser
for bringing it to our attention). Troj/MacSwp-B (aka Imunizator...
no, it doesn't immunize, it imunizates!) prays on the fears of
computer users by saying that their privacy may have been compromised,
and attempts to coerce them into purchasing software to remedy the
situation."
