[DEMUG] Permissions repair (Was: Re: OS 10.4 on CDs)

One AppleCare phone tech told me that I must run Disk Repair from the
original system disk (necessary since you can't repair the current boot
disk) but said that I should restart and log back in to my account
before repairing permissions. He claimed that for the permissions to be
set properly, I should have my actual user id, rather than the special
id used when you boot from the system CD or DVD.

I've never bothered to look for confirmation of this, but it seems
plausible. (However, I have heard demonstratively untrue stuff from
AppleCare phone techs...)

Still, Michele's point that you should be able to boot from your system
disk as needed is a good one.

Also for 10.3 vs 10.4, 10.4 is pretty sludgy with less than 512 MB RAM,
but 10.3 seems happy with 256.
