(From Apple posting to University of Maryland MUG). Boot camp users
need to get a beta license to cover the time between September 30 and
when Leopard ships, at which time THAT license will expire and you'll
have to buy Leopard to keep using Boot Camp.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Boot Camp Beta Expiration
The Boot Camp Assistant and license for Boot Camp beta versions 1.0b
through 1.2b will expire on September 30th, 2007. Expiration does not
affect installed copies of Windows. Updating the beta license is simple.

*What to do*

Affected customers that want to continue in the Boot Camp beta program,
should return to http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/, agree to the updated
license terms and download the latest version. This ensures they have
the latest Boot Camp drivers which enables them to provide more accurate
feedback to Apple. The new beta license will bridge the gap between
September 30th and the day Leopard ships. As stated in the Boot Camp End
User License Agreement, when Leopard ships, the beta license for Boot
Camp beta 1.3b and 1.4b will expire. Customers will need to purchase and
install Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to obtain a new license and continue using
Boot Camp.

*Which specific components of Boot Camp Beta expire and how are Boot
Camp Beta previewers affected?*

The Boot Camp Beta Assistant in versions 1.0b through 1.2b can no longer
be launched after they expire. The Boot Camp Beta Assistant is used to
create or resize a Windows partition, create the Macintosh Drivers disc
containing drivers for Windows, and restart the Mac using a Windows
installation disc.

*Will installed copies of Microsoft Windows stop working when Boot Camp
beta expires?*

No. Expiration does not affect installed copies of Windows.

*How will Apple be communicating this to customers?*

The expiration date is described in the End User License Agreement
(EULA) that the customer read and agreed to before Boot Camp was
downloaded from Apple's web site. Apple will also have a KBase article
describing what to do when Boot Camp beta expires, and there will be an
article on the Boot Camp download page http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/.

*Reminder*

Boot Camp Beta is a preview of a new feature in Mac OS X Leopard and is
licensed for use on a trial basis for a limited time. Do not use Boot
Camp Beta in a commercial operating environment or with important data.
You should back up all of your data before installing this software and
regularly back up data while using the software. Your rights to use Boot
Camp Beta are subject to acceptance of the terms of the software license.

Additional comments:
/
/
/I've received some questions about this, so I thought I would add some
further clarification. Apple released 5 beta versions of Boot Camp to
the public for evaluation and feedback. While these preview (beta)
releases were designed to run under Tiger, the final version of Boot
Camp will not be available for Tiger. Boot Camp is a feature of Mac OS X
10.5 Leopard, which will be released in October 2007. Each beta
version's installer indicates the date of expiry for that version. /
/
/
/The license and ability to launch the Boot Camp Utility for Boot Camp
1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 will expire 9-30-07. Macs configured to dual boot will
continue to do so ad infinitum, however the license to use the software
(Boot Camp Utility and the Boot Camp drivers for Windows XP/Vista) will
expire on 9-30-07, and the Boot Camp Utility will no longer launch after
this date (you will lose the functionality provided by the utility). The
license for Boot Camp 1.3 and 1.4 will expire on the day Leopard is
released in October. Obviously, it may not be possible for you to
upgrade to Leopard on the same day it is released, but the intent is
that you should discontinue using Boot Camp (Utility and drivers) or
upgrade to Leopard to continue using Boot Camp. The ability to launch
Boot Camp Utility for 1.3 and 1.4 will expire on 12-31-07. /

confusion./
