[DEMUG] Writing a CD

This may seem like a pretty elementary issue to many of you, but today
is the first time I've tried to burn a CD on a Mac, to archive some
mail. It didn't go well.
When I first put in an unformatted CD-RW (and later a CD-R), it asked me
what I wanted to do with the unformatted disk, and, gullible me, after
first having it call the Finder and having a comment about the disk
being unformatted, I decided it should call Disk Utility instead, and
regrettably made that action the default. Disk Utility didn't enable me
to do anything with the disk, and now that I've Googled how to write
CD's on a Mac, and see that I do indeed need to have the Finder
involved, I can no longer get a prompt to use the Finder, having
declared Disk Utility to be the default action.
How does one cancel the default-action-on-CD-insert? And should I
assume that there is no need to format a CD, that that is done as part
of the burn?
Thanks for any help on this.
Dick
