     I've had two experiences.  First thing to know, is that tiger takes
     up a lot of initial resources re-indexing for the search function.
     This may take a half an hour or more.

     I also had problem on one of my computers, because of incompatible
     drivers for software I wasn't using (I think an old version of
     Norton or something like that) which made it difficult to log in (it
     started up and froze before the Finder started.  I could run
     applications, to a point, but not open files or run the Finder).  I
     had a firewire drive, which I loaded the OS on to test running, and
     everything worked fine there.  So, I just started removing things,
     until it worked.  Since then I've only added back what I've needed.
